The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers document Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) realization that Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) was the person who tried to run down Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) should serve to restore the proper order. Just when it seemed that the Moustache and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) forged the beginnings of a truce, one of the most enduring battles in Y&R’s history may be back on.
As savvy fans took note of, Billy told Jack about his alter ego persona. That shocked Bergman’s longtime character, while also setting up what’s to come.
The Colonnade Room was the high-brow setting where high teas were held back in the cliched day. During one of them, Jack and Victor had it out. Then, Victor suddenly keeled over.
Unlike his recently faked collapse in the Ranch living room, Victor was actually in peril. However, Bergman’s much-ballyhooed improvisation took place, as Jack stepped over Victor on his way out of the empty dining area. Yes, Victor was left for dead.
That was just one of many cruel acts these lead male characters employed against the other through the years. That’s what made their recent conversation, which took place at Society just prior to Victor’s death hoax, so intriguing.
Soap fans are passionate about the shows they watch because of the time and emotional investments made. That’s why any fundamental shift, except in the case of a crisis, or some other mind-altering temporary event, represents audience rejection territory.
Sure, Y&R fans have been willing to laugh with Jack and Victor from time to time. Hardcore fans enjoyed the hospital scenes that took place after the collapse of The Underground. Y&R’s edition of ‘The Odd Couple’ then provided comic relief for a handful of days.
So, the viewer’s experience made them skeptical about Jack’s inching respect for Victor before the Arizona trip. Hearing about the Black Knight’s latest return from the dead didn’t evoke rancor. But learning that Victor wants Billy in jail, or some similar thing would restore Jack’s ire to its normal level.
It would be preposterous to have Jack and Victor become friends, even without the potentially developing storyline that involves Billy’s revenge act on Route 7. By all sense and soapy reason, the characters Bergman and Braeden play shouldn’t even be friendly to each other.
Change is needed because of the vast quantity of episodes that are produced year-round by any daily soap opera. But cast adjustments, new adventures for enduring characters, and other reasonable decisions represent daytime standards. That’s why restoring Victor and Jack’s battle, rather than changing the dynamic, is highly likely to happen.
