Queen Elizabeth Approves Controversial Order To Suspend Parliament

While there’s no doubt that Queen Elizabeth has definitely seen her fair share of make ups and break ups during her reign, she probably hasn’t seen anything like this! There are new reports that indicate the Queen has approved a controversial order to prorogue Parliament, with many critics calling it her most daring, if not also unpopular, move in recent years. Here’s what you need to know.

The Queen’s Very Bold Move

The court of Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth is currently on vacation with her family, released a statement that says the Queen approved an order to suspend Parliament. This comes after the Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson reportedly called the Queen to discuss the situation. Under his plan, the body would not meet again until Oct. 14 — two weeks before the deadline for Britain’s planned departure from the European Union. The statement confirmed that parliament would be suspended on a day between Sept. 9 and Sept. 12, until Oct. 14.

Proroguing The Parliament

The order reads: “It is this day ordered by Her Majesty in Council that the Parliament be prorogued on a day no earlier than Monday the 9th day of September and no later than Thursday the 12th day of September 2019 to Monday the 14th day of October 2019, to be then holden for the despatch of divers urgent and important affairs, and that the Right Honourable the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain do cause a Commission to be prepared and issued in the usual manner for proroguing the Parliament accordingly.”

Many Critics Are Not Happy With The Move

And while a lot of people are calling this a very bold move (with some critics even calling it undemocratic), Boris Johnson insists he wants Parliament suspended so he can develop an agenda for his new government. However, many critics believe that he simply wants to move on with Brexit with or without a deal and without dealing with his opposition.

What Can Brexit Watchers Expect Next?

In addition, Boris Johnson said in a statement to the press that the Queen scheduled a speech for Oct. 14. This is when he will also present his agenda. So far Buckingham Palace has not made any additional comments.
