General Hospital’s Griffin could have been so much more. Griffin was brought in as Duke Lavery’s (Ian, Buchanan) son with a nun of all things. The story would have been much better if he had been Duke and Anna Devane’s (Finola Hughes) son that Anna miscarried years ago. Griffin would have fit as Anna’s son so much better than Peter being hers. Duke and Anna have such a rich history and Griffin being their child would have added a great branch to their legacy.
If General Hospital’s Griffin had left right after Kiki Jerome’s (ex-Hayley Erin) funeral, this exit would have made sense, but to stay long enough to know the killer’s identity and disappear doesn’t work for most fans. Why would Griffin not remain in town until Ryan’s fate is confirmed? Griffin loved Kiki and would want justice for her, his abrupt departure at this point gives him no satisfaction or conclusion.
For some time it has been noticeable that Griffin is not dealing with Kiki’s death. General Hospital’s Lucas Jones committed on how much Griffin had changed since medical school. We have seen very little of Griffin compared to Ava Jerome after Kiki’s death.
If the goal was for Griffin to leave town why not have Griffin experience a mental breakdown and leave town for help? Griffin has mentioned several times that he boxes to feel anything because he is numb. Griffin’s reaction to Kiki’s death has the classic symptoms of a mental breakdown. Other doctors have been in substance abuse treatment; nurses have been in the hospital for mental breaks, why not a doctor?

The compelling part of this story should have shown Griffin deal with his emotions while trying to work at General Hospital when Kiki worked as well. Seeing Griffin working out or sparing with others at the gym would have helped us to feel his pain and realize how badly he was handling the situation. Instead of only showing Griffin take out his frustration on Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) by beating him on the pier.
General Hospital’s Griffin should have at least admitted to Lucas that he nearly killed Kevin and would have if Ava hadn’t stopped him. The most fitting of Griffin’s exit was that his last scenes were with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), Duke Lavery’s friend.
What are your thoughts? Did you expect more from Griffin’s exit or have we become accustomed to these quick exits of what have become beloved characters?
