Laura Wright revealed that she almost did not take the role as Carly Corinthos on General Hospital when it was offered to her in 2005. She said in an exclusive interview that she declined the offer at first because of two things. She “didn’t want to leave the East Coast” and she was “nervous about moving my family,” per ABC Soaps In Depth.
During that time, Laura was a cast member of CBS’ Guiding Light. She had been playing the role since 1997. When asked why she was scared to say yes even though she knew that the role was perfect for her, she simply answered, “I was afraid to leave GL. It’s been, my family. It’s a part of me.”
She realized soon enough that it was the perfect time to take on the role as Carly. After all, she already played Ally on Loving and The City and Cassie on GL. So, when she was asked if she thinks she can do the part, Laura confidently responded “Oh hell yeah. I was made to do the role!”
Carly: He has this side to him, you know. This wonderful side. He can just be so gentle and so kind. He makes you feel as if when you're with him nothing bad can ever happen to you.

She admitted that if the role was offered to her before that, she would have been able to give justice to the part. She acknowledged that she lacked the strength and confidence. She had to grow as an actress first by gaining more experience and with the help of the actors, she was able to work with. So when the Carly role was offered to her, she knew she was ready.
But that doesn’t mean she didn’t have any doubts. Laura felt pressured knowing that she would be portraying a fan-favorite character. GH fans loved Carly, especially the first two actresses who played her—Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun—but the viewers didn’t have much love on the third, Jennifer Bransford. Laura knew she had to meet viewers’ expectations and prove to them that she’s got this. And Laura didn’t disappoint. Talk to any GH fans and they will say that she’s done a great job in portraying her own. Good thing she decided to change her mind!
