Days of Our Lives viewers will recall that in recent episodes, Doug was not told that Julie needed a transplant. He also didn’t know she was too old to be put on the transplant list. Hope didn’t know either, although Julie’s grandson, Eli Grant (Lamon Archey) and his fiancé Lani Price (Sal Stowers) were told.
Hope asked to speak to Dr. Kayla Johnson (Mary Beth Evans), who told Hope the whole truth. It wasn’t just her age that prevented Julie from being on the transplant list, it was that in people over 70 years old, heart transplants generally don’t “take”. So the procedure is wasted on them, hence the age limit on the transplant list.
As much as she dreads telling her father the truth about Julie, she knows she can’t keep him out of the loop forever. He has to be told! Julie will likely not be able to come home from the hospital.
Even if she did, there would have to be constant caregiving and their bedroom at home would have to be set up with all kinds of medical equipment. Doug can’t be expected to handle all that on his own. So nursing would be required also, at the very least, if not a doctor.
The very least Julie will need is a care home or rehab where there is 24-hour care and the medical equipment necessary to keep her alive. Those, however, are very costly. And unless Doug and Julie have better insurance than Medicare, Doug might have to sell the club to pay the bills.
But then, this is soapy Salem life and not real life, so maybe the Days of Our Lives writers won’t go there. Unfortunately, however, this is real life when medical catastrophes strike for many senior citizens.
Right now, Hope really doesn’t have a job – unless Mayor Jack Deveraux (Jack Ashford) and Eli approve it, she can’t come back to the Salem PD unless she is rehired, and even then she would be rehired at best as a regular detective. Eli is the Police Commissioner and they don’t need two – or do they?
Some viewers might think that’s an excellent idea. Hope has plenty of time on her hands to be able to stay with her dad and support him through this devastating time in his life. It may be the best thing for both of them at this time, especially if Julie cannot come home.
There may be one other option but no one will want to bring it up to the Williams family – hospice. Hospice is when there is no other alternative for a patient except to wait for death to come. But unfortunately, there are no life- saving measures available or taken. Hopefully, that will not be Doug and Hope’s only choice left for Julie!
