The point of this feature isn’t to bash Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) for her act of defense. Yes, conking J.T. (Thad Luckinbill) was an instinct reaction that wasn’t planned. A parent saw a child in trouble and responded.
However, Phyllis’ (Gina Tognoni) purposely written presence in the soapy scene that unfolded then created a crime. The ‘Girls Night In’ foursome was coerced by this unjailed criminal to not report J.T.’s demise and then to dispose of him.

Sharon (Sharon Case) resisted wrong by initially urging everyone to report what happened. Vickie was in the process of doing the same thing before J.T. stopped her, acted with rage, and then was struck by his almost again mother-in-law.
Phyllis was again oddly written into the storyline when Vickie took a business trip to Canada, a destination which may have been a nod to Y&R’s many loyal fans in that great nation. In fictional reality, Phyllis was tasked with looking out for Vickie during a needed respite from Genoa City.
Upon returning to the States, Vickie couldn’t take it any longer. So she made her way to the police station and began recanting what actually happened.
Tell the man that Phyllis (then played by Michelle Stafford) intentional ran down everything and Christine (Lauralee Bell), GC’s District Attorney, the other of the then-‘Red’s’ intended targets, will finally gain an opportunity to exact justice. But four main characters will be going to jail if that happens. One among that group, Nikki, would surely be in the can years. The others, for at least awhile.
How could Y&R’s writing staff choose that plot option? Doing so would require extended prison scenes and likely, the erasure of some characters. Answer, it won’t.

This is a soap. So seasoned viewers know that all will not be over at this point. While there are points of debate within this storyline, it is proving engaging. So somehow, some way, even though crimes were committed after the accidental incident Nikki pursued, all will be cleared, eventually.
