Luckinbill returned to the cast at the end of 2017, after having been absent since 2010. His portrayal of J.T. Hellstrom initially felt very similar to the man viewers knew during the last decade. However, the storyline intentionally turned frightening and tragic to further a take Y&R’s backstage powers wanted to promote.
Vickie was written as the smitten soul who was drawn into J.T.’s realm. He held power over a woman who’s checkered relationship past included losing custody of their son Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu) to him.
Viewers were allowed to see J.T.’s total devolution. They were asked to believe that Hellstrom spun out of control because he was unhappy with his career path. The heart issue could have included some type of prescription medication abuse slant, which would have made what transpired far more digestible. Instead, the fans and selected Genoa City residents were asked to accept that this one-time good guy morphed into a monster, which then naturally left Vickie reeling.
Accepting all of the above is what soap fans do. It’s a play into the willing suspension of disbelief scenario, which noted Christian poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge is believed to have first labeled in the early 1800’s. That point is forever relevant in the daytime world, as it allows any scenario, including this one, to further whatever story, or hidden curriculum issue, is intended.

Yes, it then makes sense that Vickie was willing to do anything to preserve her relationship with J.T. for so many months. Viewers knew Luckinbill had stated he was merely returning for a short stint, which is the actual reason why J.T.’s devolution played out quickly and met its eventual, blunt fate.
It also is reasonable, within this world, to accept that Nikki, Phyllis (Gina Tognoni), and Sharon (Sharon Case) would gather on that most fated-night, per Sharon’s request. They needed to be present for J.T.’s break-in, to save Victoria and so Nikki could off a third character, which also includes her father and Diane Jenkins (Maura West).
Taking everything means that Vickie would be emotionally wrecked and that the three other parts of this quartet would need to press a coverup. So, Vickie needs solace and is off to Canada, with Phyllis’ help.
Yes, this storyline clearly plays into current, point-of-view real world events.
