Nick (Joshua Morrow) doesn’t see that he’s become more like Victor (Eric Braeden) on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Morrow’s character thinks he’s separating himself from the ‘Moustache’, but the opposite is true.
Sharon (Sharon Case) doesn’t want to leave her home. And the cottage became her legal property as part of ‘Shick’s’ divorce settlement. But Nick heard his revived love’s comments as reflecting sentimentality. Victor’s essence could be felt via that projected thought. Yes, it was chilling on both sides of the screen.
Dark Horse isn’t just a new company, like The Underground was. Nick’s plan, to build a chain of night clubs across North America with Noah (Robert Adamson) failed, due in part to a series of unfortunate incidents and Victor sabotaging his son’s efforts.
The strong emotions linked to Victor seizing temporary custody of Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) fueled Nick’s desire to fulfill what Newman Enterprises was to have been. The existing global entity was supposed to be a legacy gift for generations of Victor and Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) offspring, yet today’s ruthless company doesn’t resemble family feelings in the least.

Sharon recognized the shift in Nick’s persona when he justified gaslighting everyone with his J.T. (Thad Luckinbill) ruse. He apologized, but overrode that comment with a ‘Black Knight-ish’ ends-justifies-the-means explanation.
Case’s character was thrown by Nick’s seeming transformation, as it represented something far greater than actor feeding a lash-back. Instead, a paradigm shift had taken place within his mind and his soul.
Morrow’s recent comments about initially wanting his Y&R reign to end at the quarter century mark (1994-2019) were revealing. Believing that he’d explored all possibilities with the classic Nicholas Newman, Y&R offered him the opportunity to go dark. Thus Dark Horse is actually reflective of Morrow’s vision for Nick.
How Sharon and all of Nick’s loved ones deal with who he’s becoming is sure to make engaging soap. As to Morrow’s interest in exploring other sides of his alter ego, that’s what a daytime actor who values a legacy cast spot and wants to expand creatively does. Kudos to him and to the show.
