Soap fans know that Doug Davidson (Paul) was recently let go from ‘The Young and the Restless’. While his forty-year regular contract run might eventually turn to a recurring status slot, it’s also possible that Chief Williams may fully disappear from Genoa City. That makes Rey’s (Jordi Vilasuso) arrival so much more impactful.
I can’t believe @DougDavidsonYR has been let go of playing Paul Williams, a role he has played for 40 years. He is a Daytime Emmy award recipient, and he is a part of what makes #YR special and successful. This isn’t right, and it’s very disappointing. #FightForDoug pic.twitter.com/ru0WBu5O91

Paul has been a fixture at the station for many years. He and his wife, District Attorney Christine Blair-Williams (Lauralee Bell), have been law and order in this Wisconsin city for awhile. The projected shift now appears to make Y&R’s newest character its lead enforcement officer, but also the realization of an entirely new GC family.
An interesting scene took place recently. Paul and Rey were inside Crimson Lights. They passed by each other, one giving a seemingly meaningless coffee stirrer to the other. In fact, that was a visual signal which indicated a passing of the baton.
Vilasuso is a soap veteran in his own right, having previously appeared on Days of our Lives, All My Children, and Guiding Light (daytime’s longest enduring soap that ended its historic run in 2009). His newly introduced character is Arturo’s (Jason Canela) brother. Canela debuted earlier this year.

The Rosales’ siblings will be joined by their sister, Lola (Sasha Calle), later this week. Together, this trio will present Y&R’s first entirely new family in many years.
While the Ashby’s are a newer family, Cane (Daniel Goddard) was first connected to the Chancellor’s, Jill (Jess Walton), and to the then-single Lily Winters (Christel Khalil). Michael Baldwin (Christian Le Blanc) was written into the show in 1991, his brother Kevin (Greg Rikaart) was invented in 2003, followed by their mother Gloria (Judith Chapman) in 2005.
While there are other existing characters that could be mentioned, it’s basically been fifteen years since an expansion of Y&R’s clans has occurred. Rey represents a new direction, both at the GC Police Department and within the writer’s room. Yes, the immediate future is intriguing.
