‘New Nick’ exists because Joshua Morrow wants him to on ‘The Young and the Restless’. With 24 years under his belt, Y&R surely didn’t want to lose another key cast member, let alone a legacy Newman family member. So, Morrow requested to take Nick dark as a way to explore new elements within his character and that’s what’s happening. Thus Dark Horse was born.
It’s intriguing to see Morrow pushing himself in this direction, as he’s noticeably projecting a different persona since Nick revealed that he was J.T.’s (Thad Luckinbill) poser. The enhanced version of this character could run for years in this very different direction, diving into storylines not previously possible. But let’s give it time, meaning at least six months, to see how all flows.
Part of Nick’s new character quirks is allowing him to be like his father in more ways than just business. Like Victor (Eric Braeden), Nick is seemingly pursuing at least one woman outside of his committed relationship. Make no mistake, his eye survey of Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) while she was sitting with him on the couch at Summer’s (Hunter King) condo this week meant that he’s still interested and could revisit ‘Phick’ at any point. The difference is that this version of Nick no longer frets about his actions, he just moves on.
Sharon (Sharon Case) doesn’t know what Nick did with Phyllis yet. Surely Y&R had to write that recent one-time (question mark) revival scene so that Sharon would eventually learn the truth, right? Of course this information won’t come out short-term, but instead will be saved for maximum impact in the coming future.
In keeping with this new avenue’s philosophy, a redo of Phyllis stopping ‘Shick’ Part II at the altar seems unlikely. A better outcome would be to push Sharon to another man.
Jordi Vilasuso is soon set to debut as Rey. Possibly, this character will serve to split Sharon from Nick. That take would be different, as Sharon would drive the breakup.
It also makes sense to think that Nick would use the betrayal, or even the belief that one took place, as Victor has so often done to Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), in order to end his relationship with Sharon. That, again, would further the father-son comparison that ‘New Nick’ doesn’t realize he’s creating.
