The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Mattie Teaches Reed a Lesson – Young Man Must Grow Up

Mattie (Lexie Stevenson) is being presented as a responsible young person on ‘The Young and the Restless’. As for Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu), well, he’s written as quite the opposite. And so the lesson this young lady taught her boyfriend nicely applies.

It’s an interesting choice Y&R made, having written Leabu’s character toward trouble. It is stereotypical to have a young man be the problem. The implied message is that so many of his ilk are dopey, which, based on experience isn’t true.

‘Meed’ is, or was, or will again be the most heart-warming couple in Genoa City. Many viewers can surely relate to having been them, oh so long ago.

Both characters have lived lives that their parents and other family members provided for them through hard-earned efforts across many years. So the jealous, group-think term ‘privileged’ won’t be applied to the fictional realities Mattie and Reed are experiencing.

Mattie thinks of herself as a nerd, but Reed didn’t see her that way. That’s why he wanted to be friends. This pairing then quickly developed into a couple.

Stevenson’s character was completely correct to have called the police when she saw Reed enter his car after drinking beer. She was scared because he was recklessly endangering his life and those of others.

Many on- and off-screen parents throw up their hands, believing that children like Reed can’t be controlled. They believe in allowing children to express every emotion that exists at all points in time, which plays down to base behavior and often represents non-parenting.

In contrast, there’s a wise young person like Mattie. She instinctively knew that morality exists and can be evidenced through the use of courage.

Mattie may well have prevented a tragedy from occurring on the night in question. If that projected dilemma wouldn’t have played out, then Reed probably would have felt that he got away with what he did and likely would have increased his risk-taking moving forward.

Soap operas send messages of all kinds, some of which have been addressed within this digital space. So here’s hoping that Y&R recouples ‘Meed’ at some point. Viewers will then be able to experience both solid character’s (and strong actor’s) continuing stories.
