Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) irrational grudge that he holds against his father will lead to trouble for him, whether or not Jack (Peter Bergman) is brought down on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Victor (Eric Braeden), Jack’s infernal pain in the neck, has once again exploited Kyle’s undefined teenagerish angst in a storyline that needs more plot meat served to a famished audience.
All who oppose the aroma, chewing sensation, and smooth digestion of meat should skip to the next paragraph. The Kyle arc doesn’t taste like a nice New York strip steak, or even a good burger. Instead, it continues to gum like some type of supposedly organic goo that was sourced from wherever. Yuck, into the spittoon and now back to the grill.
Yes, Victor had a previous angle to play against Jack by using this other-casted Kyle’s beefs against his father. But in 2018, and in considering the age of the character Mealor is now playing, does this storyline make sense?
A vague explanation was offered during the dialogue exchange between Mealor and Bergman when son and father had a heart-to-heart in Jabot’s Chief Executive Officer’s suite. Nothing new was learned. Instead, old sores about the late Diane Jenkins (as last played by Maura West) were peeled.
Viewers are being asked to suspend disbelief by swallowing the belief that Kyle felt so slighted while in New York that he colluded with Victor to take Jabot public. Maybe. But to now ask that Jack will be swayed by Kyle’s phony attempt to build a relationship with him, while at the same time reporting to Victor, is more than a mouthful.
Here’s hoping that Y&R is writing a twist into the plot. Something whacky, like Kyle actually being Victor’s son (despite past proof to the contrary that made him Jack’s boy). Maybe Jack and Victor share the same father, due to one of Dina’s (Marla Adams) many revealed dalliances.
With whatever happens, Mealor deserves stronger material. This iconic show has often delivered. So let’s be patient and see if Kyle’s actions are going somewhere.
