Dina (Marla Adams) was clear for awhile this week. During that time she recognized her son ‘Jackie’. One can’t relate to what the Dina’s of the world are going through as they deal with the brain-ravaging effects of Alzheimer’s.
Does one feel it coming on? When the fog lifts, is there an awareness of what happened? What varying impact does this type of situation have on the loved ones who are in any way connected to someone who’s suffering with this disease? Questions without certain answers, for sure.
Jack doesn’t know what caused his mother to develop this disease. It could be that she was genetically predisposed to it, or contracted it through due to unknown (or unstated) side effects of prescribed drug use over the course of many decades. Then again, it could have resulted from the chemicals she ingested from the foods she ate and the liquids she drank while living in France as Madame Mergeron.
Other options, a combination of all of them, ones already listed, or unknown factors caused Dina to be as she is now. Her status caused the reveal that Abby (Melissa Ordway) digitally recorded. An unknown culprit made sure that portion of the interview sessions was included in Charlie’s (Noah Alexander Gerry) documentary, which is how Jack learned John (Jerry Douglas) supposedly wasn’t his father.

Douglas has been conspicuous by his absence during Adams’ current run. John’s appearance would have informed the audience as to whether he actually knew about Dina’s dalliances while he was alive. If John didn’t, then his otherworldly powers would have enabled that knowledge to be gained, after which he would have offered wise counsel to Jack. Y&R fans must assume that Douglas is no longer able to perform due to possible health issues, though that’s pure speculation.
If John isn’t coming back to aid this cause, then Dina will surely have a moment, or more, of enlightenment this summer. Jack will then come to know who his father is, if it’s not John Abbott. Many loyal GC fans continue to hope that Dina’s memories in this instance are purely being affected by her disease and that John has been, is, and will always be Jack’s dad.
