Victor (Eric Braeden) suspected that his head of security at Newman Enterprises and soon-to-be son-in-law was up to something. So he laid a trap. A key was seemingly planted in Victor’s home office safe, which J.T. found.
A hidden camera was installed in the safe, so Victor was aware that J.T. broke in. Mr. Hellstrom’s subsequent return to the Ranch and convenient find of the lock under Victor’s living room chess board furthered what became a pushed arc.
The crescendo to this storyline arguably began the moment Victor caught J.T. Both men fought in the second-floor hallway, Victor fell backward down the stairs into the foyer and was rendered unconscious. That established a ticking clock, where Victor’s recovery from his coma and induced mini-stroke would eventually reveal J.T. as his assailant.

Now, in yet another illogical act, J.T. came back from Hawaii. Why would Mr. Hellstrom do that knowing he could be arrested at any moment? To say that this villain isn’t thinking straight is somewhat of a weak answer.
Yes, J.T.’s entire erratic nature is the reason why he’s done everything, including grab Vickie (Amelia Heinle) by the neck, attempt to take out Victor a second time and try another attempt at reconciliation with his second true love. However, admitting what he did to Victor is reminiscent of a one-episode procedural drama where the perp spills all.
Yes, J.T. will receive justice, albeit through a blunt object. And possibly, Luckinbill can return another day in the form of a different persona. But to write J.T. Hellstrom into a corner where he’ll never be able to achieve redemption doesn’t honor who this once-liked character was from 1999-2010.
That’s not to say that Y&R didn’t create a compelling mini-arc since December. It did. But a different outcome would have felt better, as many tenured fans likely understand.
