J.T. (Thad Luckinbill) continues to breeze through Genoa City on ‘The Young and the Restless’. A seemingly pressed character storyline continues to unfold for Luckinbill’s character. The latest example being J.T.’s transfer to Newman Enterprises after a brief stay at Chancellor Industries.
Fans of this actor and the character he played from 1999-2010, were happy when he announced his return to Y&R late last year. Tied to that pronouncement was a caveat; he advised that J.T.’s storyline might only run through February, or March 2018.

It’s understandable that Y&R wouldn’t confirm, or deny how long Mr. Hellstrom will be staying in Wisconsin. Possibly he’ll remain indefinitely, which is what consumers of good soap are hoping for. By withholding said plans, if there are time limits, the showrunner (an industry term, used loosely in this instance) maintains audience doubt and thus regular GC views continue.

If Luckinbill has only committed to a limited return, then all of his character’s apparent rushed experiences make sense. J.T. was barely back in town when he and Vickie (Amelia Heinle) reconnected. Normally that process would take months to play out. Then his ex-wife quickly asked him to move in with her and their son, Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu).
Father and son recently bonded during guitar scene. Soap fans would normally see far more strife between the generations, followed by some dramatic event forging a deeper connection. That sequence felt like an emotional marker Reed could use in the future to fuel his musical pursuits sans his dad.
Cane (Daniel Goddard) literally created a job for J.T. at CI. Mr. Hellstrom left it because a position he was actually qualified for just opened at Newman. Then J.T. uncharacteristically belittled Cane while resigning. Hmm.

An ominous plot point was offered recently when a flash-back sequence showed J.T. being electrocuted. That explained his heart condition, current pill-taking and odd mood shifts.
Does that suggest this character is being written toward a kill-off? Doing so would permanently end Luckinbill’s ability to reprise his role again. With various unanswered questions and more plot to play out, Y&R fans must keep watching.
