The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Cane’s Fears Confirmed – Reed’s Reckless Behavior Creates Dramatic Consequences

It was easy to read Cane’s (Daniel Goddard) face on ‘The Young and the Restless’. He didn’t like Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu) being in ‘Lane’s’ home and therefore with his daughter, Mattie (Lexie Stevenson). Now, days after the surviving Mr. Hellstrom’s week-early return to Genoa City, an accident occurs.

As Y&R fans recall, Reed’s immature behavior created problems the last time he was in town. Most dramatically, he, Mattie, and Charlie (Noah Alexander Gerry) nearly died inside The Underground more than a year ago due to a fire Dina (Marla Adams) accidentally started. Among various outcomes, Reed had his driving license suspended.

Leabu’s character was later written out of the show (last spring) in order to further Thad Luckinbill’s (J.T.) write-out. The sound of this still-evolving storyline appears to have reached crescendo now that Reed is back and has learned various particulars about what happened to his dad.

Cane’s instincts are right. Not an over-protective parent, Mr. Ashby’s role, sans Lily (Christel Khalil), is to serve as both father and mother. Parental experience and common sense tel him that a handful of months hasn’t been enough time for Reed to mature. And he obviously hasn’t.

Charlie foolishly gave Reed the keys to his car, which led to the terrible accident that’s put Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) in a coma. Thoughtful Y&R fans are right to question ‘Lane’ for allowing Charlie, or Mattie, to have their own car(s). But that point can be left for reader’s consideration.

As the owner of a car is liable for what happens with his (in this case, Charlie’s) vehicle, the law could mostly penalize Cane’s son. In not knowing the details of the Ashby’s insurance, it’s possible that the car in question is titled to Goddard’s character, in which case Cane will also be in trouble.

All of the above could have been avoided if Reed would have actually implemented some of the wisdom he seemingly gained earlier this year. Excusing him, or Charlie, for teenage status merely deflects personal responsibility, which will now need to be taken by a number of characters, including Cane.
