The Young and the Restless (YR) RUMOR: Jack is John’s Son – Traci Isn’t An Abbott

Recent comments by Mal Young, the executive producer and head writer of ‘The Young and the Restless’, imply that Jack (Peter Bergman) was, is, and will remain John’s (Jerry Douglas) son. Traci (Beth Maitland), a recurring character who has been unusually present in recent months, will be revealed as the non-Abbott.

If this buzz proves true, Y&R fans across the globe will rejoice. While they are fully fond of Traci and will surely support her understandably emotional response to the outcome, having Jack be anything other than an Abbott would be a moral outrage!

As viewers recall, Kyle (now played by Michael Mealor) and Summer (Hunter King) were once involved. So suggestions that Jack and Victor (Eric Braeden) could be linked to the same father, Albert Miller (played by the late, great George Kennedy), would have proven unseemly. Kyle and Summer would have been rewritten as cousins. No.

Tenured Y&R fans recall that the show temporarily made Katherine (played by the late, great Jeanne Cooper) Jill’s (Jess Walton) mother. That supposed revelation later proved false, as DNA tests confirmed. The audience strongly questioned the believability of that suggested storyline at the time and were generally pleased that it was reversed.

In this instance, Dina’s (Marla Adams) fleeting memory recall caused Abby (Melissa Ordway) to record her grandmother saying that John wasn’t Jack’s son. Abby and Ashley (Eileen Davidson) then had a quickie DNA test done.

However, John passed away years ago. So Abby and Ashley tested samples of Jack’s hair against Traci’s, assuming that she was an Abbott. The samples didn’t match, which established that Jack and Traci are not blood relatives.

With however soapy science decides it, having Traci be the non-Abbott would be far less controversial than removing Jack from the family bloodline. Of course, this news would foil Kyle’s plan and stick it to Victor as well.

Y&R deserves credit for causing a segment of the audience to wonder who Jack’s other family might be. While tempting, the better rewrite choice is to have Traci learn that John wasn’t her dad.
