J.T. (Thad Luckinbill) appeared to be dead on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Then he appeared to be buried. But did Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) really send him to another world during that night of dark shadows? Yes, there were two classic soap opera references in that last sentence.
Would various fans be outraged if Luckinbill’s character isn’t gone? Of course, but in today’s digital world they would hesitate to express their feelings (wink). Tenured soap fans do relay opinions, but also know that it’s often wise to be patient with this genre.
Believability is the issue in this feature. So, if Y&R decided to turn a normal human being into a monster, which it did by writing J.T. Hellstrom into a personal maelstrom, seemingly steeped in Colleen’s (Tammin Sursok) death last decade and career setbacks he’s suffered since, then it stands to reason that Luckinbill will be written out of the shallow grave that Vickie (Amelia Heinle), Phyllis (Gina Tognoni), Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nikki dug and put J.T. into.
Wait, how could this happen? Well, J.T. could simply be unconscious. Yes, he didn’t appear to exhibit a pulse, but Sharon might not have been able to detect his faint blood pump when checking his body.
So, the ladies leave and J.T. crawls out of his grave. That supernatural event would be reminiscent of something many characters did on ABC’s classic horror steamer ‘Dark Shadows’.

Possibly J.T. could crossover to ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’, as various Y&R characters have done, including Sheila (Kimberlin Brown). She crossed back and forth many times, most recently reappearing last year even though she (as then played in a dual role by Michelle Stafford) seemed to be shot dead by Lauren (Tracey Bregman) in 2006.
Seasoned daytime fans know that ‘Another World’ was set to be a spinoff of CBS’ ‘As the World Turns’ in the 1960’s. But the network didn’t accept Irna Phillips pitch and the soap was sold to NBC. Despite that fact, ATWT character Mitchell Drew (Geoffrey Lumb) did crossover to AW.
Suspending disbelief would also allow willing fans to envision J.T.’s unknown twin as having been killed by Nikki. That would allow J.T. to be alive.
Possibly Marco Anaselli (Peter Bergman) took revenge on Victor (Eric Braeden) and sent J.T.’s doppelganger to Genoa City late last year. If true, then Luckinbill would have been playing a dual role, a la Bergman and Stafford. Therefore, J.T. would still be living somewhere and could be seen again soon, or someday.
