Eileen Davidson (Ashley) announced her voluntary departure from the cast of ‘The Young and the Restless’ earlier this year. She’s since filmed her final scenes and her alter ego will last been seen in Genoa City within days. Considering past departures from the cast and the current state of the genre, it’s fair to ask if Davidson will ever be seen as Ashley again?
This character has been recast before. Actually it’s happened a few times.

The Davidson debuted on Y&R in the mid-1980’s, which was the same time period that she debuted on Days of our Lives as Kristen DiMera. The Ashley role was first recast in 1988, when Brenda Epperson took over.
Shari Shattuck followed Epperson’s run, which ended in 1995, by becoming the third Ashley in 1996. Shattuck remained on Y&R through 1999, when Davidson returned. Daytime fans know that the Ashley character also crossed over to The Bold and the Beautiful in 2007 and 2008.

Davidson’s public comments regarding her departure from the cast appear to indicate an uncertainty about whether she would return or not. Executive producer and head writer Mal Young has stated that Ashley could be seen again. Whether the ever-great Davidson plays her is, of course, to be determined, as both parties would need to agree on what could be a recurring contractual agreement, rather than regular cast stature as has existed in recent years.
Ashley is a legacy character. Recent drama within the Abbott family and the many retrospective scenes, covering periods dating back to the 1980’s, imply that Davidson’s run is ending. Invented flashbacks, that again use child actors to portray Ashley and Jack, also seem to serve as a wrap on this portion of the show’s storyline.
Y&R is scheduled to run through 2020, with the potential of further renewal years existing. The idea that Davidson will never be back seems presumptuous, whether, or not, Ashley reappears in a form previously seen, or what would be a third recast.
