The Young and the Restless (YR) News: Camryn Grimes’ Second Effort Awarded – Daytime Emmy Winner Again

Camryn Grimes (Mariah), of ‘The Young and the Restless’, won a Daytime Emmy Award in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category. The actor’s second award is all the more impressive because of the character she portrays.

Tenured Y&R fans know that Grimes won her first Daytime Emmy Award in 2000. However, she wasn’t portraying Mariah at that time on CBS’ iconic steamer. Instead, the actor who was born in 1990, was portraying Cassie who was Mariah’s twin.

Grimes arguably was (and remains) the greatest child actor in Y&R’s history. Her addition to the cast in 1997 widened Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) family. Cassie’s death, which occurred in 2005, still stands as one of, if not the most controversial storylines ever.

Y&R’s creative team wanted to take Sharon and Nick in a different direction and chose to kill off the teenage Cassie, who died as the result of injuries suffered in a car accident. Grimes, Case, and Morrow’s farewell hospital scene easily ranks with the most heart-wrenching moments in all of daytime history.

While Cassie died, Grimes remained a recurring cast member. She continued to portray Cassie’s spirit, who appeared to various cast members, most notably Sharon, on a variety of occasions through the years.

Grimes’ return to the cast played into the ghostly vision angle, as Victor (Eric Braeden) capitalized on Mariah’s apparent doppelganger appearance to gaslight Sharon. All characters, including Mariah herself, were stunned to learn that she actually was Cassie’s twin. The audience was asked to suspend disbelief, as Sharon was written as having not known her other daughter was delivered at the time of Cassie’s birth and was subsequently stolen.

Mariah is clearly her own distinct individual. She’s not a Cassie copy in any way, which credits Y&R’s creative team and the actor herself. Full kudos for finding a way to bring this great actor back to the show full-time in 2014, and to Grimes for earning another well-deserved award this year.
