The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Sad Health News for Y&R Star

It has been announces that Nichelle Nichols has been diagnosed with Dementia. The actress was last seen on the Young and the Restless September 5, 2016. She portrayed Neil Winters’ (Kristoff St. John) mother Lucinda Winters.

Nichols has been under the care of Dr. Meena Makhijani for almost three years and her Dementia is progressive. Her doctor indicated that Nichols condition is currently at the Moderate level. While Nichols suffered a mild stroke in early 2015, her current condition is not believed to be related to that health scare.

While Nichols has no long-term memory loss or problems with verbal communication and is able to recognize familiar people she is suffering from short-term memory loss as well as possible impairment of a sense of time, place and immediate recall.Nichols is well known for her starring role in both the Star Trek television series and motion pictures.

Nichols portrayed the character Uhura, communications officer Lieutenant (later, Commander) aboard the USS Enterprise. She had a long-term romance with the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, for several years before the show began.In May of this year a Los Angeles court issued a temporary order appointed four conservators to oversee Nichols’ financial affairs.

The order was in response to Nichols’ only child, Kyle Johnson, request to protect Nichols from people from taking advantage of her. The order will most likely become permanent when it is again addressed in court this month. Nichols is not opposed to the court action.
