The Young and the Restless Beth Maitland Talks Playing Traci Abbott for 30-Plus Years!

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) Beth Maitland sat down with Soap Opera Digest to talk about her 30-plus year arc as Traci Abbott. She talks about how she feels about the writers and directors and the direction of Traci’s character.

Disagreements?

Maitland said that there have been moments that she was uncomfortable with the material she was given. However, as an actor, her job, once she agrees to do the job, is to make the script come alive, exactly as the writers intend. She cannot get into with them and battle them over her feelings. She believes once she steps foot in the Sony studios, her opinions no longer matter –and her job is to make Traci come alive!

No Interest in Fighting

Beth said that she has no interest in fighting over the development of Traci Abbott. She has always trusted the Young and the Restless writers with Traci’s character development. She never wanted to interject her personal feelings in her character. Basically, she said, whatever the writers give her in a script, she does her best to make it come alive, exactly as they wanted it.

Her Job Description

Maitland explained that her job is to show up on time, get her hair and makeup done, and memorize her lines. Anything more than that is not in her job description. She said she is not one of those actors that try to change her lines or rewrite the story. She said her job is acting and the writers’ job is to write.

“It’s really that simple,” Beth laughed.
