The Australian soap opera’s first episode of 2018 saw David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) get down on one knee and ask his boyfriend Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) to marry him – a significant scene as this is the first gay proposal for the soap.
The script was written and filmed long before the historic referendum vote that came in November. As the new law was implemented from January 9th, one line in the script had to be changed to ensure that the show was up to date with current Australian law.
Paul Gartside, who penned Tuesday’s episode but also produces episodes for the show, wrote on his twitter page: “The first draft of this episode included a line where David commented that the proposal would just be symbolic, since he and Aaron couldn’t legally marry. Never been so happy for a line to be cut. #Neighbours”

Matt Wilson also talked about the scene recently, describing the events as a “fluke”, admitting that the scene was not added to reflect the change in Australian law. Talking to Sydney Confidential, Matt said “The writing department actually fluked this. We filmed this about three months ago and the writers came up with the idea about six months ago, so the timing has worked out perfectly.”
He continued, “I think it is very special. A lot of the times we try to attack issues on the show and sometimes they have been and gone in the media or they don’t get as much light as they can but this should absolutely bring the issue to the surface.”

Executive producer Jason Herbison is also very excited that the show now has potential to feature same sex marriage. Talking to Inside Soap, he said “I’m particularly thrilled that we’ll soon have the option of celebrating all relationships in our community.”
However, with Aaron rejecting the proposal and upcoming spoilers revealing that David dumps Aaron, it seems like a wedding between the two men may not happen anytime soon.
