General Hospital Spoilers; Maurice Benard Teases Tragic GH Storyline

General Hospital star Maurice Benard is opening up about his very heartbreaking storyline with his on-screen father, Mike Corbin (Max Gail). Mike is currently dealing with his deteriorating mental health. And according to Maurice, it’s not going to get better.

Speaking to ABC Soaps in Depth, the actor, who plays mob boss Sonny in Port Charles, says that his father’s diagnoses of Alzheimer’s Disease are both “beautiful and tragic.” Sonny and Mike didn’t always have a close relationship but now that his father obviously needs him, Maurice is stepping up to the plate. He doesn’t want to abandon Mike even though that’s exactly what he did to him as a young child several different times.

He told the publication, “This story has scared me more than any other story I’ve done. This is something everyone can relate to.”

What’s more, the actor also says that while dealing with Sonny’s emotions is challenging at times, he’s more than happy to be working with a talented actor like Max Gail in front of the cameras again. Each day he learns something new with Max on set.

He added, “It’s exciting to walk on the set with Max. Just touching him in a scene… it feels like my real-life father, to a T. And Mike’s wardrobe, it’s just like my dad’s. Even his hat makes me think of my dad. It makes me very emotional.”
