While there are a lot of daytime and primetime television shows that come and go, very few make it past a few short seasons. There are fewer that make it past a decade. And then there are just a handful of shows that make it 55 years. General Hospital is one of them, and now the show’s producers are crediting the soap’s ever changing format to its long-term success.
As a matter of fact, General Hospital – which just happens to be the longest running daytime television soap – has managed to revolutionize the soap opera genre with faster pace production, modern stories and beloved characters that fans both know well and love.
General Hospital is one of few soap opera dramas that has managed to thrive, despite the crowded television landscape these days. And it’s all because the producers and writers have managed to keep up with the times.
“Soap operas are an original American art form that’s been copied into other forms of television, but our show is a drama that also has elements of comedy and action-adventure,” executive producer Frank Valentini told Variety in a new interview.
He added, “It’s rare for a show to encompass all of that, while at the core being a show about love, family and relationships. We tell stories from all perspectives. We’ve held onto all these elements and that is how we maintain our place in the television landscape.”
