Imagine being a teenager believing you have your whole life ahead of you and finding out your mother has known for two years that you were dying. How would you feel in this situation? Forget the fact that he’s a kid is it far to keep that kind of information from anyone? As an adult, we would be furious if someone lied to us for two years about something this serious. Why in the world would Oscar act any differently?
Oscar just got to know his father, a man who promised to be honest with him. Kim (Tamara Braun) tells Drew (Billy Miller) what is wrong with Oscar and Drew lies to him. Oscar now feels that he cannot trust either of his parents. His grandmother is a doctor and is going to push for treatment. He’s broken up with his girlfriend because he doesn’t want her hurt by his death. And whenever he talks to either parent, they push for him to join a drug trial that he’s afraid to join. Imagine what you would do if you were in his place.

There is no easy choice. Oscar’s tumor is inoperable, and there is no cure. Oscar believes he is going to die either way. For Oscar, it is black and white, he is dying, and no one can change that. Oscar knows he has lived two years with a tumor he had no idea he had. Oscar also knows there is a possibility of brain death if he takes this treatment. How many people would risk brain death if they had survived with a tumor for two years?
Oscar may be a minor, but he is the one who would have to go through the treatment. Oscar would be the one risking his life. Why should Oscar not have a choice in this decision? Why should Drew and Kim be allowed to decide to risk Oscar’s life, especially when Kim has risked it for two years already? Should Oscar not have a voice in what happens to his body? Should it not be at least partly Oscar’s decision how he spends the rest of his life?
Instead of berating Oscar for demanding a say in the rest of his life, fans should put themselves in his place and think about how they would feel. Not how you would feel like an adult but how you would feel like a sixteen-year-old kid that had been lied to for two years already. Would you want your parents to force you to have a treatment that could kill you faster than cancer you have survived for two years? Would you accept their decision or would you want to have a say in what happens to your body?
Would you want to risk what time you have left to buy time for a cure that might never come? Would you risk the quality of life you have for something that could be much worse? Oscar is not doing this as defiance; Oscar is scared and lost. Oscar needs time and not pressure and Oscar needs a say in his fate, he’s not asking for anything that any adult would not want.
