General Hospital Head Writers Open Up About New Storylines

These days it seems as though all of the drama in Port Charles is happening outside of the hospital. But according to General Hospital head writers Shelly Altman and Chris Van Etten, that is all about to change. That’s because the two co-head writers are looking to breathe new life into the hospital with of course, new and fresh storylines!

According to ABC Soaps in Depth, it’s no coincidence that newcomer Stella ended up working at the hospital as a social worker. That’s because many of her storylines are going to focus on what is going on in the hospital, rather than outside of it.

Shelly explains, “When we bring in a new character who doesn’t need to be in a different field, we often look for ways to incorporate them into the hospital. It doesn’t have to be as a doctor or a nurse, because many other types of people work in that environment.”

After all, everyone still remembers how Rebecca Budig’s character worked at the hospital before leaving town. Chris Van Etten even says that the soap is called General Hospital for a reason!

He said, “That should be the center of the show. We always look for that balance. Sonny is one of our very important characters and he – like several other locals – is a mobster. So we naturally have stories taking place in that realm. But, we have also found ways to tie him to the hospital, particularly with the story revolving Mike’s illness.”

In other words, expect to see more comings and goings inside those hospital walls!
