EastEnders Spoilers: Abi Branning’s Death Date Confirmed, Emotional Death Scene Details

In what is sure to be sad news for EastEnders fans and cast alike, the soap has announced that it will air Abi Branning’s (Lorna Fitzgerald) death on January 19.

The BBC One show has confirmed that the young Branning will be taken off of a life support machine and die shortly thereafter on EastEnders.

Devoted EastEnders fans have been waiting since December 25 to learn the outcome of the younger Branning sister after both Abi and Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) took a nightmare plunge from a rooftop. What were they doing up there in the cold and dark instead of properly celebrating the holiday with family and friends?

In an act of what some would call very undeserved love, the girls were trying to save their dad from committing suicide. Max Branning (Jake Wood) took to the rooftop in an act of utter despair, having recently lost all that was important to him. His final solution ended up to be just temporary for him but fatal for Abi.

For his part Max has not been able to come to terms with Abi’s fate on EastEnders, and who could blame him? To lose a child is devastating enough, but to realize that you are the cause of the loss of life would be unbearable.

Just this once it is possible to feel something akin to sympathy for the cold, dark man who has been the root of so much evil in Walford.

Max tries to face reality by ending his vain attempts to save a brain-dead Abi and instead focusing on her baby. Can you imagine Max putting together a crib for his granddaughter?

The bereaved man does just that, only in the end to give in to his grief and anguish by destroying what he’s created. Such an apt metaphor for what Max has done his entire life, with Abi being his latest victim.

The EastEnders scene is beautifully written and Wood delivers a breathtaking performance.

Next week will be heartbreaking for the Branning family; how can they possibly mend after all of the sadness and pain?
