Steve Johnson has been an essential part of Days of Our Lives since 1985. With Stephen Nichols announcement that he was leaving, fans expected an exciting send-off. However, spoilers say Steve’s send-off isn’t even something we will see onscreen.
Steve Is Important To Days
Steve Johnson came to town in 1985. Steve and Bo (ex-Peter Reckell) served in the Merchant Marines together. Steve and Bo were great friends until Britta (ex-Amy Stock-Poynton) came between them. Steve was there to help Hope (Kristian Alfonso) through her miscarriage with her first child. Steve became friends with Bo again later that year. Steve is married to Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans), a prominent Salem family. Steve is partners with John Black (Drake Hogestyn). He’s Justin Kiriakis’ (Wally Kurth) brother in law. He is tied up in years of history. 33 years of history.
Steve Could Have Left Town On His Own
Steve could have gotten mad at Kayla over her lies and left town on an assignment. Steve could have needed time away and left town on his own. Steve could have found out Jack (Matthew Ashford) was alive and went to find him. Steve could have gone looking for E.J. (James Scott) to help Sami. We could have seen he and Kayla say goodbye. Fans could have had some closure.

Steve Could Have Made A Dramatic Exit
Steve could have died again. Why not have a Vitali kidnap hVim. Steve could have fought with Stefan and died. Steve could have been in a coma. Steve could have had a life-threatening reaction to the bionic eye. Stefan could have turned off the eye, and Steve died in an accident. But Steve fans get nothing but a quick and silent exit.
Offscreen Exits give Us No Closure
We went through this for years with Bo Brady. Bo would disappear for years. Bo was assumed imprisoned. Hope felt abandoned by Bo. The back and forth happened forever, and then Bo was killed. Fans deserve better with Steve. We have grown to love Steve in these 33 years. We feel for Steve and Kayla. We enjoy Steve and Kayla as a couple. We deserve more. Quick and silent exits are not what fans expect for beloved characters. We want to cry with their write outs now matter how they happen. It is a part of being a soap fan and fans should have payoffs.
Many fans of Patch are going to be disappointed with this exit. We can only hope to see Stephen turn up on another soap so we can continue to enjoy his acting.
As always, more detailed spoilers and a full collection of pictures for the week in question will appear here on Soap Opera Spy, when there could be more clues and hints over exactly what’s going on.
Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on the NBC network.
