According to the Irish Mirror, health experts worry that there are too many alcoholic scenes associated with the show’s pubs and of course, their characters. And they believe that this might be the reason why so many Brits are drinking more and more alcohol each year. That’s why the Center for Tobacco and Alcohol studies wants the shows to air much later in the evening.
Also, a study by the Nottingham University found out that 50 percent of all programs on British television in the 6-10pm time slot involve some alcohol imagery. The research was conducted by analyzing over 1,140 commercial breaks and over 611 television shows. Both Eastenders and Coronation Street were soaps that were part of the research.
Researcher Alexander Barker recently told the Irish Mirror, “There is strong evidence that viewing alcohol advertising or imagery has an uptake on subsequent alcohol use in young people.”
Coronation Street airs weeknights on the ITV network and is available on Britbox in the United States. Check your local listings for times.
