Our favorite soaps bring stories to life, they are a temporary escape from reality for just a moment or two. They often blur the lines between bad and good and the stories are not always believable. Nevertheless, we cannot bear to miss a single episode of our favorite soap. We care about our favorite characters so much that soap fans become angry when a storyline takes an unexpected turn. Some extreme fans confuse the line between the fictional characters and the actors and go as far as to attack the actors in person and on social media.
Such an incident happened this week. Let’s break it down….Steve Burton left the role of General Hospital’s Jason Morgan. Once he left the role Billy Miller stepped in to play the character. At the time there was a lot of fan outrage over the way Billy was playing the character. However, many fans loved the new softer Jason and fans got behind the NuJason and Sam romance. Billy Miller and Kelly Monaco got a huge base of loyal fans who called themselves “Killy.”
When it was announced that Steve Burton would be headed back to General Hospital a lot of “Killy” fans were dismayed. They hoped that Billy Miller would be the true Jason Morgan. However, as the story unfolded it became apparent that Billy Miller would be Andrew Cain. The Killy Fans renamed themselves “DreAM,” (Drew and Sam) and that seemed to be that until one fan went too far.
The fan took to Twitter and lambasted Steve Burton, Laura Wright, Maurice Benard, Bradford Anderson and Caroline Hennesy. She went so far as to hope they all died from Burton Nutrition (a Steve Burton fitness product). She did not stop with her tweets she tweeted each of the actors. Other GH fans became outraged and had the tweet taken down by complaining to Twitter. The fan was never remorseful for her tweets and felt she was justified.
“Fu** you @BfordAnderson @1SteveBurton @lldubs @MauriceBenard @carolynhennesy fu** you all. I hope Burton Nutrition poisons you. #BillyIsJason #Killy #TeamBilly”
This seems to be the case of someone illogically blurring that line between fiction and reality. The tweeter became overly involved with the details of Billy Miller and Kelly Monaco’s personal and professional life. Certainly, it is great to have fans love the actors but sometimes the attention and adoration they received is the wrong kind of devotion from fans.
