The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Reed Draws Mattie Toward Trouble Again – Good Mothering Matters

Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu) and Mattie (Lexie Stevenson) make a cute couple on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Both younger characters come from well off families, which could imply a dual belief that all problems can be covered with money and power. But good parenting has once again been confirmed as separate from class status.

Lily’s (Christel Khalil) positive influence is instilled in Mattie, which caused her to call the police. She made a judgment call about her own boyfriend. Y&R is projecting a strong role model in Stevenson’s character, as Mattie bucked popular calls to be amoral.

Y&R fans knew trouble was brewing (wink) when ‘Meed’ arrived at a Genoa City Athletic Club suite where Charlie’s (Noah Alexander Gerry) lacrosse team was having an inappropriate party. Alcohol was flowing and Reed got drunk.

A later scene showed Lily having arrived on a city street, where a distressed Mattie was waiting. She told her mom that she called the police because Reed left the party and was driving under the influence. The GC Police Department subsequently arrested Leabu’s character.

Meanwhile, Vickie (Amelia Heinle) was home drinking wine with J.T. (Thad Luckinbill). Devoted fans recall that Vickie lost custody of Reed (then played by Max Page) to her ex-husband, Mr. Hellstrom, at the tail end of the last decade. Use of magical soap time has been sprinkled into today’s scripts as savvy daytime devotees know.

Lily isn’t perfect, but she has consistently mothered her children. Her past indiscretion with Joe (Scott Elrod) occurred years ago in soap time because Mattie (then played by McKenna Roberts) and her brother Charlie (then played by Aidan Clark) were very young. In real time Elrod’s character appeared on Y&R in 2014 and 2015.

‘Lane’ has endured a recent breakup, due to Cane’s (Daniel Goddard) kooky personal choices. However, the SORAS’d twins haven’t veered nearly as far off course as Reed has due to his parents’ longterm lack of oversight.

Victoria and J.T.’s son arrived, all grown up, in GC on New Year’s Eve having run away from home. While he is a good-hearted young man, Reed’s impulsive actions then drew Mattie into dangerous situations as 2017 played out.

Halloween night almost proved tragic after Reed orchestrated a friend’s meetup at The Underground. Dina (Marla Adams) nearly burned the place down and if not for Billy’s (Jason Thompson) bravery, Reed, Mattie and Charlie could have died in the fire she accidentally set.

The year-ending alcohol antics actually underscore Cane’s early trepidation about Reed. Lily initially agreed with her estranged husband before offering ‘Meed’ measured opportunities to be together.

Yes, good mothering matters. Vickie loves all three of her children. But she must be more like Lily moving forward, which means that Reed deserves her consistent attention.
