The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Phyllis and Billy Are Over – Philly Misguided From the Jump

Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) wanted to believe in Billy (Jason Thompson) on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But he was always a replacement for the man she truly loves. While ‘Philly’ did develop chemistry, longtime Y&R viewers must acknowledge that this pairing was misguided from the jump.

Some may say that the history of these characters made their coupling wrong. But Michelle Stafford’s turn as Phyllis and the actions of the various actors who played the adult version of Billy until Thompson took over aren’t the main reason why ‘Philly’ was wrong.

Trust builds a relationship. Revenge against one’s husband and brother shouts dysfunction. That’s what Phyllis and Billy embodied all along.

Yes, Tognoni’s version of Phyllis and Burgess Jenkins’ edition of Billy initially became friendly. That was somewhat believable, though viewers rightly assumed the evolution was a setup for an eventual pairing.

Everyone knows that Billy still loves Victoria (Amelia Heinle). He’s married the woman multiple times and was trying to rekindle that romance until Miss Newman told him to get lost, though she later recanted her statement. The immediate aftermath of that specific rejection spurned Billy’s follow-up pursuit of Phyllis.

Mr. Abbott had no problem violating Phyllis’ trust when he used her laptop to gain access to Jabot’s corporate files. Later, he learned about the real plans for Brash and Sassy’s rival’s men’s line when he grabbed her smartphone and read her text messages. An apostrophe used three consecutive times in the last sentence merely underscores the tension that’s been building between this duo.

Phyllis recently agreed to work with Jack (Peter Bergman) to set up his brother. Someone who considered Billy to be her soul mate would never have done that. But Phyllis did because she’s remained uncertain about Billy’s commitment to her.

Whether ‘Philly’ could have ever worked is unknown. But what’s apparent is that Phyllis and Billy must go their separate ways now. However, this likely outcome could always be altered because this is a soapy world.
