The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Dina Still Living In Genoa City – Important Storyline Arrives at Thanksgiving

The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Dina Still Living In Genoa City - Important Storyline Arrives at ThanksgivingDina’s (Marla Adams) diagnosis has been revealed on ‘The Young and the Restless’. The Alzheimer’s storyline that arrived just prior to Thanksgiving affords Y&R viewers a chance to blend reality and soap.

How far executive producer and head writer Mal Young plans to go with this plot line obviously isn’t known. But if he chooses to address Dina’s serious issue for an extended period of time the fans will know that Y&R is serious about using its platform to promote ongoing awareness of a serious health topic.

Escapist fantasy has it’s place within this steamer, as does comedy, or general drama. But the specific topic of Alzheimer’s is one that can and should be tackled in order to further understanding and extend support.

A split is often seen within soap operas. Some storylines are offered for comic relief, like Jack’s (Peter Bergman) totally unexpected romantic connection with Gloria (Judith Chapman). Other plots are heart-warming, like Ravi’s (Abhi Sinha) interest in Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and hopefully, her acceptance of that kind young man’s love. But Adams’ arc is different.

Directly addressing Alzheimer’s isn’t easy. Many viewers are surely linked to real-life family members and friends who are battling the disease. Dina’s revelation that Graham (Max Shippee) facilitated a doctor’s appointment last year, that led to her being aware of the subsequent diagnosis, began to shed light on how Y&R may approach this topic.

Mal Young has strong soap chops. He and his team are clearly able to write an ongoing storyline that allows all of Dina’s loved ones to be involved in her care, while also incorporating moments of light-heartedness through their interactions.

Adams’ character has already offered dialogue that treats the subject seriously but also suggested to the Abbott family that it’s okay to be open about the matter. That approach reflects how Dina feels about herself and those she loves. Let her experience drive this story and the reactions to it vary.
