The Young and the Restless (YR) Spoilers: Dina Flashes Back To Fire – Jack Can’t Protect Mother Forever

Jack (Peter Bergman) used an old song to trigger Dina’s (Marla Adams) memory on ‘The Young and the Restless’. While a record player’s sound filled the Abbott living room, Dina flashed-back to the Halloween night moment when a match was put to Brent Davis’ (Bert Kramer) photo at The Underground. And with that Jack’s ability to protect his mother became impossible.

It was smart for Jack to take a leave of absence from Jabot. He needs to focus on family instead of the family business right now. But Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) saw through his game plan. As his now-former girlfriend advised, Jack can’t fix what’s wrong with Dina. He also can’t protect her from facing questions about, if not the consequences of, committing arson.

Viewers would be right to think that the authorities will go easy on her whenever the truth about Dina is revealed. A key plot point was revealed last week when Dina told her children that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a year go. That medical documentation likely establishes a legal defense that can be used to help Madame Mergeron avoid jail time.

Nick (Joshua Morrow) will want some form of justice. His visit to the Abbott mansion and Jack’s refusal to allow him to speak with Dina was suspicious. Paul (Doug Davidson) will play by the book as he works through this case, but he also seems prone to facilitating a deal where Dina gets the professional help she needs.

Y&R continues to craft a meaningful storyline. Adams has taken her scripts and continues to create a richly textured interpretation of what so many human beings are experiencing in their later years.

Society doesn’t truly know why this disease is afflicting the population. So it will be interesting to see if Mal Young and his team speculate about how Dina contracted, or developed Alzheimer’s.

Has her condition been inherited? Did the long-term effects of prescription drug use create the issue? Might exposure to asbestos or mold in a building in Paris be at fault? Did chemicals in the food she consumed on either side of the Atlantic be to blame? Could a combination of one, or more of the factors referenced, or another that hasn’t been mentioned be tagged as responsible?

This storyline has been great to-date. It would also be deeply engaging for Y&R to speculate about the cause of Dina’s condition as another climax nears.
