Jack (Peter Bergman) and Billy (Jason Thompson) were serious about resolving their differences. The Underground fire saw Billy heroically rescue three children. It also allowed Jack to risk his life to be with this brother, who was trapped and appeared to be facing death.
The resultant detente that the Abbott brothers reached was a giant breakthrough. The message to the audience wasn’t that near-tragedy afforded an opportunity for waring factions to put their differences behind them. Instead, it reinforced the reality that family members and friends shouldn’t allow themselves to reach alienation points, to begin with.
Meanwhile, Dina’s (Marla Adams) finally-stated Alzheimer’s diagnosis can also be seen in a positive light if a deeper perspective is gained. At least Graham (Max Shippee) seemingly is no longer a threat to the Abbott children’s mother. And now, Dina’s health issues can be treated as best as medical science and prayer allow.
Ashley’s (Eileen Davidson) pain was a heart-felt consequence that resulted from Dina’s return to town. However, Davidson’s character’s expression of compassion toward her mother and Bergman’s range combined to beautifully reflect what children of similar parents regularly face around the world. Beth Maitland (Traci) also added to the storyline through her recurring character’s consistent touch of class.
Adams’ outstanding portrayal enabled Y&R to present one of, it not its most important social topics in years. Alzheimer’s affects countless millions of viewer’s loved ones each day. Using the daytime drama platform to promote awareness and offer steps toward addressing this critical issue demonstrated the use of positive media power.

Y&R fans know that the Abbott’s are certain to face future problems in the near and distant future. But considering the conflict these characters have endured in 2017, it will be nice to see them enjoying the fruits of Thanksgiving together in the Abbott house this week.
