‘The Young and the Restless’ offered a beautiful four-pack of stand-alone stories that executive producer and head writer Mal Young greenlighted. A brand new Christmas episode presented heart-warming scenes that all viewers could enjoy.
Hardcore daytime devotees were able to follow events that were set within the Christmas season in Genoa City. Viewers who were visiting with family members and friends on this holiday could also enjoy the show, which served as a fictional side dish between regular episodes.
Sharon’s (Sharon Case) scenes with Mariah (Camryn Grimes) were wonderful. Both fine actors evoked the memory of Cassie (Grimes original role), while also reaffirming their relationship.
A previous Y&R regime brilliantly rehired Grimes to portray a new character in 2014. While viewer’s pain in losing Cassie more than a decade ago wasn’t wiped away as a result, this major character decision afforded a fine furthering of Sharon’s plot, in particular, and a way for the past to be rightly honored. So too did this part of Y&R’s Christmas episode that featured Sharon and Mariah.

Hilary (Mishael Morgan) is a top actor in all of daytime. Y&R winked at devoted audience members on Christmas, as the letter Devon (Bryton James) read to GC Buzz’ audience was one that Hilary wrote when she was a girl, then known as Ann Turner.
It appears that Young is going to allow Morgan’s character to evolve. That seeming news is outstanding, as this actor will have a clear shot to win a Daytime Emmy Award through her performance as honest Hilary.
Billy (Jason Thompson) thought that he’d screwed up, again. He ordered Phyllis’ (Gina Tognoni) Christmas gifts, but they hadn’t arrived in time. A nice separate shot with Abby (Melissa Ordway) was inserted at Chancellor Park, which also foreshadowed this episode’s ender.
Most of The Twelve Days of Christmas themed-gifts were eventually received, including five rings. That surely winks at ‘Philly’s’ coming engagement, or so it seems.

So, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) met Kathy, which is short for Katherine (Jeanne Cooper) of course. Mrs. Newman didn’t recognize this angel initially, but soon realized that the greatest of all GC characters, yes, even greater than her husband, the famed Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), had sent her a message from Heaven.
Katherine used an otherworldly colleague to first greet Nikki at the Chancellor Park cafe. Y&R fans recognized Katherine within the homeless woman, as Cooper’s character went homeless oh so long ago.
By the end of this Christmas episode Katherine’s necklace was found inside Nikki’s purse which had been stolen, but actually wasn’t. No, what happened was intended soapy magic that sent various messages, both in GC and through the script.
The entire hour was a great treat. Y&R deserves kudos for a nicely crafted show.
