Max was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot at birth and has gone through at least a dozen different surgeries. The 12-year-old actor wears a pacemaker and has an artificial pulmonary heart valve.

On July 12 Max represented the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles at the 2017 Speak now for Kids Family Advocacy Day.

Max told People Magazine in a statement, “I hope that I can be the face for healthcare and show them that kids have health problems and that we didn’t do anything to deserve this. It just happened to us.”

Back in June reports indicated that Max was hospitalized yet again because of another virus or bacterial infection. The young actor has been in and out of hospitals for months now, following a serious infection of the heart.

Because of Max’s ongoing health issues, his character J.T. on ‘The Young and the Restless’ was recast and SORAS’ed and is now played by actor Tristan Lake Leabu.
