‘The Young and the Restless’ delivered. Dylan (Steve Burton) was written off the show in a believable fashion and the veteran actor who portrayed him was given a stylish sendoff. Kudos to head writer Sally Sussman and her team for creating a memorable ending for this likable character and well thought of soap star.
No matter how long Burton played Dylan, he was always going to be remembered for his iconic role on ABC’s ‘General Hospital’. However, one mark of a solid actor is whether the audience forgets about past characters that person portrayed. From the jump, Jason Morgan was quickly forgotten in Genoa City.
Burton’s choice to accept a role on Y&R where he played against type proved to be wise. Dylan arrived in 2013 as a returned soldier who fought in the Middle East. His early battles with PTSD allowed a topical issue to be given plenty of screen time, which helped to raise awareness.

Vulnerability bookended Burton’s stay on Y&R, as the Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) reveal crushed Dylan’s soul. The decency in which he dealt with that impossible situation was very touching, including those scenes where Dylan asked Nick (Joshua Morrow) if he could spend time with the boy who was believed to be his (Dylan’s) son. Nick’s rejection of those requests were heartbreaking, especially when devoted viewers considered the baby Avery (Jessica Collins) lost and Chelsea’s ruse about Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) being his child.
It was smart to not have killed Dylan off, or have him go missing. Doing so allowed proper goodbye scenes to be written for each of the current actors Burton spent time with during the bulk of his Y&R run.

People do enter the Witness Protection Program for various reasons in real life. While Dylan expects to live inside his new life from here on out, it’s also reasonable to believe that he could return at some point. Burton and Y&R could mutually choose to renew their relationship again someday. If that never happens, this character and the actor who portrayed him have both left gracefully.
