Victor (Eric Braeden) isn’t all bad on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Some Y&R fans must surely dislike the headline and the first sentence in this paragraph. But all who seek balance know that the so-called ‘Black Knight’ is a complex character. So too are the readers of this piece and it’s scribe.

Dina (Marla Adams) went to Newman Towers to see her old friend. Meeting under the famed oil painting of the man himself, Abby’s (Melissa Ordway) paternity secret that Ashley (Eileen Davidson) withheld from Victor many years ago was referenced. That plot history was linked to Dina’s current goal of rapprochement with her family.

Viewers who remembered Ashley’s error, or those who’ve just learned this information, know that she purposely lied to Victor about his having had a daughter. All who solely target the ‘Great Man’ likely feel that Ashley was protecting her interests based upon his behavior. Right, blame him for Ashley’s actions in order to keep the theory of Victor’s awfulness in tact.
Provocative? Oh yes, that’s the intent. A boring effort would simple cut the ‘Moustache’, or simply say that he’s misunderstood. But neither effort would be honest.
Tell us, Victor haters, who was it that paid $10 million ransom so that Scott Grainger (Daniel Hall) could gain his freedom? Mr. Newman then followed up to make sure Scott’s friend in that ever-troubled region was safe as well. The repayment Victor is asking of Scott is also hardly terrible. And let’s not forget, Abby did recently defy her father’s business wishes, which will confirm Victor’s instincts eventually.
Keeping with evidence, verses skewed opinion, Victor acted upon Dina’s request that he reach out to Ashley on her behalf. And he did so on the same day.
Victor told Ashley that he reconciled with his own mother years ago. Hardcore Y&R fans also recall that Braeden’s scenes with his real father (Albert Miller, as played by the late George Kennedy) rank with, or at the top of his run on this show. Victor sought reconciliation with the man who abandoned him as a child during those scenes, but to no avail.
Yes, Victor has willfully done bad things in the past and likely will again. No counter will be offered from this keyboard in this regard. But the man has a heart and he showed it again by helping Dina and talking gently to her estranged daughter.
It’s often hard for Victor to admit when he’s wrong. That appears to be a character trait he shares with some Y&R fans (and at times, this scribe) who refuse to acknowledge the deeper elements that exist within this man.
