‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Victor Plays Crucial Role In Saving Scotty – Newman Patriarch Redeeming Himself?

Victor’s (Eric Braeden) transformation from egomaniac to heroic grandfather continues on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Scotty (Daniel Hall) was the latest recipient of the former ‘Black Knight’s’ kindness, as his mother’s plea was met with decisive action. Co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman’s message to the audience is clear; Victor is now a good guy.

A split had developed in the audience during this decade, if not sooner. Tenured viewers had mixed feelings where Braeden’s character was concerned. Some felt he’d been written too dark, others were ready to pitch the ‘Moustache’ overboard. Newer viewers were forced to work off a skewed version of Mr. Newman that limited their view of what was once a deeper character.

Building off the death of Adam (Justin Hartley), Victor began talking about drastically changing his life. He’s followed through by making peace with family members, honestly stepping back from Newman Enterprises into semi-retirement, empathizing with Sharon (Sharon Case), telling Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) that he plans to write his autobiography, while also admitting that there was some truth written in Leanna Love’s (Barbara Crampton) biography (Ruthless) of him.

Lauren (Tracey Bregman) was shocked to learn that her son was kidnapped. Y&R appears to be purposely playing into current events by making Scotty a journalist under siege in a part of the world that remains in the news each day. Ideological messages have always been part of soap operas, along with all other forms of entertainment. So not-so-hidden messages aren’t groundbreaking.

What is new is the clear turn Braeden’s character has taken. It’s hardly coincidental that Victor decided to write his autobiography while the real life actor who plays him has just had his autobiography (I’ll Be Damned) published. Art is clearly reflecting life, or vice versa depending upon one’s perception.

Just as surely, the Victor character has nicely been positioned to explore new plot territory. Tenured viewers will again be referenced, as they know better than novices that Mr. Newman’s bad guy act wore thin long ago. Braeden has earned the right to have input into his character’s direction, which seems to be what has happened. The apparently mutual decision is welcomed by the author of this digital space.
