‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Victor Newman Mellows Out – Will Calm And Kind Version Of Patriarch Last?

Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) has lived a great life on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But having him play Dr. Evil indefinitely was ridiculous, especially as this character and the actor himself pushed past 70. Victor’s realistic veer toward normalcy makes sense as 2017 unfolds.

Y&R is a soap opera. So Victor can twirl his moustache from time to time. But this man is a mega-mogul. Being rich and famous affords plenty of storyline opportunity arcs for Sally Sussman to consider and apply.

Yes, people get divorced and occasionally remarry their soul mates. ‘Niktor’s’ countless battles and reconciliations were a bit much, yet understandable to soap connoisseurs. However, with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) being 60 and Victor having arrived at 75 it, was well past time that Y&R’s greatest super couple calmed down and focused on loving each other. That’s why it was so great to see Victor following through on his promise to semi-retire.

He’s sincere about wanting to spend time with family after acknowledging the effects Adam’s (Justin Hartley) death had on his life. Allowing Abby (Melissa Ordway) to test the reigns at Newman, rather than fully take them, is realistic. Many family businesses are passed down to willing younger generations. That’s exactly what Victor is doing, so his practicality makes sense.

Tender Christmas’ scenes with grandchildren brought smiles to longtime viewer’s faces. And, matching modern times, Niktor took Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind) into their home because Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon (Sharon Case) were battling yet again. Victor and Nikki restored stability to Faith’s life and are providing the gift of perspective. They’re also offering worthwhile advice to Vickie (Amelia Heinle) about her life.

Victor is no longer a ruthless one-man rout. He’s well into his senior years, a grandfather and a voluntary semi-retiree. Y&R has basically written him as less one-dimensional and more realistic.

As the winter plays on it will be interesting to see if Victor continues to release power in a measured fashion at Newman Enterprises and avoids misguided personal pursuits. The character, the actor who plays him and the audience should enjoy whatever develops in this natural transition period.
