Abby (Melissa Ordway) was the most unlikely heir apparent to Victor (Eric Braeden) on ‘The Young and the Restless’. However, she’s proving her worth and being allowed to grow into a major corporate role through her father’s wise guidance. With no other pressing issues in play, Victor’s shift into semi-retirement can therefore continue.

Sally Sussman made a smart move by writing Braeden’s character in a different, believable direction. Instances of Victor physically duking it out with various opponents was fun in the past.

Today those scenes would be a bit too much to believe, even considering that Braeden remains in solid physical condition. Regardless of how cantankerous he’s been through the years, the mid-70’s head of a global conglomerate is best suited to playing the role of sage as of 2017.
Nick (Joshua Morrow) has resisted involvement in the family business for many years. Currently, he’s deeply invested in Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen), is overseeing Noah’s (Robert Adamson) managing of The Underground and is working his way back to earning Faith’s (Alyvia Alyn Lind) trust. Summer (Hunter King) is living on CBS’ ‘Life in Pieces’, so super girl isn’t an issue right now.
Vickie (Amelia Heinle) could always attempt to push her sister out of their dad’s leather chair. But she recently purchased all of Brash and Sassy after being encouraged by Victor to do so. ‘Vick’ will be handling her reclaimed cosmetic company, three children and Billy-boy (Jason Thompson) indefinitely.
Adam’s (Justin Hartley) death truly hit Victor hard. Despite their often contentious relationship, Victor knew that Adam could run the company if they had ever been able to sustain detente. Since he’s believed to be gone for sure this time and all other known children were accounted for earlier in this digital analysis of the Newman Enterprises pecking order, Abby was and remains Victor’s default heir.

Just as Y&R’s new writing regime pushed Victor in a new direction, so too has Ordway’s alter ego been refreshed. It’s interesting to watch Abby’s evolution play out. By savvy viewer accounts this process accelerate as a result of the loss of her (and Ben’s, Sean Carrigan) child last year and the connected Max (Jared Breeze) arc.
Compelling soap exists when familiar faces are seen in fresh territory and that is exactly where Victor and Abby find themselves now. If Abby continues to follow her dad’s direction she may become Newman’s official CEO someday.
