Scott (Daniel Hall) believed he had the right to question Mariah (Camryn Grimes) and Devon (Bryton James) on ‘The Young and the Restless’. His reaction to their wanting to use the debacle that was supposed to be ‘Khloe’s’ remarriage as a GC Buzz piece was revealing. Journalistic ethics contrasted, in Scott’s mind, verses perceived propaganda in the modern age.

Mariah wanted to stay at the Chancellor mansion after the wedding plans had been nixed. She knew what happened would be big news. Devon agreed that his date should remain even though he no longer controls GC Buzz. In his mind, Mariah would be able to provide a balanced story and control whatever spin others might push. Scott didn’t see it that way and let both characters know it.

However, Scott was aghast when asked if he was playing an angle himself. Might his paid gig as Victor’s (Eric Braeden) biographer be directing his own intentions? He questioned Mariah and Scott and that was okay, while questioning his ethics was instantly seen as wrong.
It’s quite clear that Y&R invented Scott’s specific profession in order to show its support for those who are considered to be journalists. Reading between the lines is easy in this instance, as the hidden curriculum that’s telegraphed through storyline choice, character direction, setting and dialogue lifts perceived ideas of ideal journalism to the noses of the viewers. Yes, a reporter whose view of the world feels appealing is seen as a hero, when actually that person is often just a projection of one’s own life experiences.
Scott apparently had collegiate training and then went to work in the print industry. He opted to become an investigative reporter because he believed certain stories needed to be told. But many media decision-makers choose what will be news, or how to cover major events in ways that start with a conclusion and then work backwards.
Mariah doesn’t have a journalism degree, meaning that she didn’t fill the coffers of financially comfortable academics, many of whom choose to live inside of bubbles with like-minded souls. Nevertheless Miss Copeland was literally handed a job as Hilary’s (Mishael Morgan) GC Buzz co-host because she was friends with the boss who’s also her friend, Devon.

Devon had no formal media training. But he has plenty of cash, due to his grandmother’s generosity and wise planning. Devon, like Mariah, would be looked down upon by people like Scott because they haven’t earned membership in the media club.
All issues noted within this piece reaffirm why Y&R is a great soap, in this scribe’s opinion. Conflict and current issues generated character-driven drama for the audience to consider and debate.
