Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) is realizing the consequences of her actions on ‘The Young and the Restless’. With her marriage to Jack (Peter Bergman) now just a memory and Billy (Jason Thompson) not a legitimate option, Miss Summers sits alone. Love is temporarily unavailable for the former firebrand who has matured into a caring soul.

Michelle Stafford will always remain one of Y&R’s great actors. She first embodied the Phyllis character, turning an expected short stint into an iconic role. But Tognoni wasn’t hired to become Stafford the sequel, instead her addition enabled a fresh take to be explored.
Tognoni has created a likeable version of Phyllis, which is very impressive on a number of levels. Many fans, along with this scribe, considered the ‘Philly’ situation to be a misguided professional choice on the part of decision-makers at Y&R. That risk isn’t fully chided, as creative risks must be taken.
Daytime drama, in particular, demands that limbs be climbed or invented. But the newest writing staff, led by co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman, has smartly written Phyllis into a more promising direction in recent months.
Ravi (Abhi Sinha) recently experienced Phyllis’ developed softer side. She helped him to upgrade his wardrobe in an attempt to impress Ashley (Eileen Davidson). Phyllis also endorsed Miss Abbott, which was rather remarkable considering how each woman has treated the other through the years.
Spotting Billy with Victoria (Amelia Heinle) earlier this week and then seeing her former crush again at Crimson Lights reminded Phyllis of the life-altering mistake she’d made. Whether ‘Philly’ ever reforms is an open question. As Billy and Vickie appear to be inching ever closer to reunion, it wouldn’t seem likely. But fully discounting subsequent encounters or more than that can’t be done based on recent history.
In the meantime, here’s hoping that this 2017 Daytime Emmy-nominated finalist (Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series) continues to flourish. Her efforts as Phyllis are appreciated by thoughtful fans across the audience.
