The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Phyllis Must Make Relationship Work – Character Test Begins

The modern, vulnerable version of Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) faces a test on ‘The Young and the Restless’. This still evolving character has officially begun the ‘Philly’ era. Viewers will be watching to see if Tognoni’s interpretation of this classic character can sustain a lasting relationship, while remaining true to her revamped self.

Billy (Jason Thompson) has evolved as well. No longer Vickie’s (Amelia Heinle) dutiful door mat, Mr. Abbott decided that he’d bowed long enough to the ‘Ice Princess’. While they are generally functioning efficiently as co-parents, Billy shelved romantic hopes within the last week. His reconnection with Phyllis was preceded by a handful of brief encounters, which actually served to telegraph ‘Philly’s’ full resurrection.

Jack (Peter Bergman) was burned badly by Phyllis’ open, repeated betrayal with his brother. There’s no excuse for what she did. However, Phyllis took ownership of what happened with Billy and was willing to work to try and salvage their marriage. Jack wasn’t interested, but allowed her to remain at Jabot. That initially seemed to imply that their relationship might be revived, but it wasn’t.

A new dynamic is in play now that Phyllis and Billy went to Jack and told them that they are back together. Basically the ‘Phack’ era and the transition that followed it are both over. For the Phyllis character, ‘Philly’ affords an opportunity for Y&R to explore something different than when Michelle Stafford’s iconic version of Phyllis and Nick (Joshua Morrow) injected ‘Phick’ into Genoa City.

Tognoni’s 2017 Daytime Emmy Award was well-earned and potentially a watershed moment, as she clearly has the chops to continue building this starkly different version of Phyllis. It’s significant when any actor offers a fresh take on an enduring character and is embraced by the audience. Justin Hartley’s edition of Adam, which followed Michael Muhney’s, is a fine example to mention.

So, will Miss Summers develop a different type of relationship with the current edition of Billy, meaning one that she hasn’t created in the past? Doing so would push this character to an even higher level.
