The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Katherine’s Farewell Storyline Revisited – Sally Sussman Rightly Honors Jeanne Cooper

It’s taken more than three years to resolve Katherine’s (Jeanne Cooper) farewell storyline on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But Colin (Tristan Rogers) is helping to correct a plot hole that was created in 2013. A heartfelt thank you is offered to Sally Sussman for providing an addendum sendoff to the ‘Grand Dame’ of daytime.

Cooper passed away on May 8, 2013. Later that year her final scenes were shown. The courage and all-out professionalism that great actor exuded in hospital room shots and in her ad-libbed goodbye to Jill (Jess Walton) and therefore the audience on the stairway of the Chancellor mansion were infinitely sublime.

Without getting too deep in the soapy weeds, a music box mystery played heavily into the way in which a past Y&R writing staff handled Katherine’s exit from this world. This scribe, along with other viewers didn’t feel that particular arc played smoothly. However, he, along with all devoted fans cherished the two-part show that honored Cooper’s life. The flashbacks and cast mate conversations were great.

As to where we are in March 2017: Jill had a heart attack after discovering that Colin emptied her bank account for some undefined investment scheme. She kicked Colin out of the house and told him that their marriage was over. The ‘Duchess’ later appeared to Jill while she was in Genoa City Memorial Hospital. That classy television mirage was followed by a revealed photograph of Katherine that’s now hanging in the main living room of the mansion.

A week or so later, Colin was shopping at a thrift store, as he attempted to buy back some of his clothes that Billy (Jason Thompson) donated to charity. Mr. Abbott did so in response to Jill’s condition and his hope that a divorce was imminent.

Colin was rummaging through second-hand clothes and nicknacks. He happened upon some of his personal items and the aforementioned music box, which also helped to reunite ‘Jilin’ after Katherine’s death. Colin found a key in a previously concealed compartment which later opened a lock box. The lock box contained a sealed letter for Jill and a one-of-a-kind emerald and diamond ring.

Sussman’s intent is clear. She wasn’t thrilled with the way in which Katherine was written off either. The new regime has been writing Y&R back to classic soap during the past few months. This storyline works and offers another nod to Cooper, as well the fans who still miss her.
