The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Jack Back on Victor’s Trail – Y&R Restores Classic Feud

Who really wanted Jack (Peter Bergman) and Victor (Eric Braeden) to play nice on ‘The Young and the Restless’? Co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman surely didn’t, as she’s directed her team to reignite the war between ‘Smilin’ Jack’ and the ‘Moustache’. Whether the coming battles in this enduring war will be engaging remain to be seen.

Jack famously took about a year off of Victor-bashing. Doing so help cost him Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) and his own self-respect.

Shaken by the end of ‘Phack’, which actually resulted because of Billy’s (Jason Thompson) connection, Jack has returned to form and is hotly pursuing his anti-Victor agenda again. He even attempted to recruit Phyllis to his renewed cause.

Pitting two alpha-males against each other plays to those within Y&R’s audience who see most guys as similar. One-dimensional and cruel when it suits their fancy. Stereotyped to whet a slanted and unquenchable appetite.

However, all honest fans will also acknowledge that most female soap characters are also portrayed rigidly as well. Why they’re accepted is a separate interesting point to be explored within a future article.

Soap opera fans are unique. As loyal as fans of any other genre, they stick to ‘their show’ for years and often pass the torch to subsequent generations. But the rub in this instance involves the fans familiarity with and protection of legacy characters.

Non-soap fans, or those who claim to be so don’t want mental comfort food. They seek entertainment thrills through television shows that supposedly break new ground, or at least make these personality types believe that’s what’s being done.

Today’s intentionally fractured television landscape is living in the era of so-called ‘Peak TV’, where more than 400 currently running shows are vying for sustainable audiences.

Y&R still draws between four and five million live viewers in the United States each weekday, along with additional time-shifting viewers (DVR’s), plus all other viewers across the globe.

Braeden and Bergman still have solid on-screen chemistry. So Y&R fans will continue to watch as long as Sussman’s team provides believable ways for Victor and Jack to battle. Yes, consistent writing remains popular in 2017.
