Mal Young is the executive producer and now, head writer of ‘The Young and the Restless’. He accepted a second title this summer and his writing staff’s episodes are now being broadcast. With that in mind, which characters deserve to be written in different directions now that a new vision has taken hold?
Y&R’s top boss recently indicated that changes were coming to CBS’ enduring daytime steamer. Young suggested that he doesn’t plan to immediately make dramatic changes to the cast, but will be freshening various character’s storylines.
Soaps are always ripe for critique. So which Genoa City residents should begin new adventures?

Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) has allowed herself to be used by Billy (Jason Thompson). It’s hard to imagine that the fierce Phyllis fans came to know and love (or loathe) through the years has become so seemingly insecure.

Yes, Phyllis finally reached the point where she sees Billy for who he really is. But when will she revert to form, take charge and get Jack (Peter Bergman) back, or find another soul mate?
Speaking of Jack, when did he become such a wimp? Allowing Graham (Max Shippee) to muscle his mother out of the hospital and onto a plane didn’t feel right.
His connection with Gloria (Judith Chapman) was uproarious, but was also out of character. Plus, it didn’t play into an overall plan that went anywhere. ‘Smilin’ Jack’ needs to win again.

Lauren (Tracey Bregman) has only been seen sporadically this year. The owner of Fenmore’s must appear more often in Genoa City.
The skillfully played connection with Jabot allowed Lauren to retain control of her family company. In addition to money matters, let’s reignite her relationship with Michael (Christian Le Blanc). Both actors would benefit from a new challenge. If this couple took a trip to Los Angeles they could easily become entangled with Sheila (Kimberlin Brown).
Of course there are plenty of other characters who can be referenced. Our savvy audience should feel free, as always, to add to the digital suggestion box.
