Once upon a daytime Camryn Grimes played Cassie on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Fan response determined that she was and remains the best child actor in Y&R’s history. This week’s fond flashback scenes with Tamara Clatterbuck (Alice) reminded tenured viewers and informed newer fans how great Grimes has always been.
A satisfying set of scenes had Mariah (Grimes current embodiment of Cassie’s twin sister) agree to play Cassie’s ghost once more. She did so after telling Sharon (Sharon Case) that Alice was tied up in the stables on the grounds of the Newman Ranch, as part of an effort Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) was making to save Crystal (Morgan Obenreder).

Grimes never left Y&R, after having been written out of regular status in 2005. She sporadically played the role of Cassie’s angel thereafter, offering comfort to her loved ones and to still-grieving viewers. But the actor’s return to regular status electrified the daytime world in 2014.
Was Cassie going to be resurrected somehow? The fans hoped not and she wasn’t. Instead Victor (Eric Braeden) happened upon a stunning doppelganger at Crimson Lights, not knowing that she was Cassie’s identical twin. Initially, Mariah and Sharon weren’t aware of that staggering fact either.
Creative soap data mines the past, as Y&R did in this instance. Cassie’s death has often been cited as a turning point show history. The choice to write-out that specific character was widely seen as wrong. Well, mistakes can be addressed.
Grimes’ return to Y&R accomplished something spectacular. While the Cassie mistake couldn’t be erased, a new course was set. In so doing, Grimes was able to be reincorporated into the cast.
Her success at creating an entirely different character was reaffirmed, likely in no greater way, as she sat aside of Case. Yes, the pair play acted mother and daughter once more. A story inside a story was witnessed.

Within this week’s scenes fans could see Grimes projecting Cassie to Alice, but in a different way than when Mariah was gaslighting Sharon via Victor’s advisement. Grimes masterfully evidenced a starkly softer, as compared to who Mariah is. Yes, she was Cassie again.
The solid work of the three reunited actors, the setup, scene and dialogue the writer’s room created for them and various other factors combined to create effective soap magic. Kudos to all involved.
